Canadian asylum system collapse | National Post

Ahmed Hussen, who is the immigration minister, constantly states that the nation has a “strict and efficient system of immigration and border control,” but a letter has been leaked where it makes clear that in fact, Canada has a backward asylum system and that in the same way “is not sustainable”.

On the other hand, Barbara Jo Caruso, president of the immigration law section of the Canadian Bar Association, emphasizes that Hussen considers how to reform the backward asylum system but also does not give the necessary information on the matter nor the changes that the government of Justin Trudeau carried out regarding the situation. For June, a report was produced in which a specific recommendation was given requesting a review by the Board of Immigration and Refugees (IRB). As a result, the department has conducted a thorough analysis of the findings and recommendations of the report, but it would be too early to speculate on future changes in the asylum system, according to Hussen in the letter.

Meanwhile, there are those who consider the immigration minister’s letter to be “an admission of failure by the federal government” and likewise the existing system is not designed to adapt the current volume of asylum applications. Coupled with this, they consider as inconceivable the fact that the federal government has the nerve to look Canadians in the eye and tell them that the system works since it is the opposite since the same system has actually collapsed.

Now, it is necessary to highlight that Canada during the past year was affected by a dramatic increase with respect to asylum seekers entering the country through official border crossings, especially in rural Quebec. The task assigned to Hussen in his February 2017 mandate tasting was to improve Canada’s asylum system, the minister is said to recognize the need to increase IRB’s capacity, but he argues that the existing problem is not really a novelty since it is from before the recent influx of asylum seekers, it also says that a massive backlog of asylum applications has been inherited as a result of a decade of bad policy under the Harper Conservatives.
